..Enough for a new car maybe?

Well, that reminds me of the first car I ever owned.

I was 10 or 11. The car was a Model T Ford. Not running. I never got it to hit a lick. In those days there was no power starter. Just the hand crank and a strong arm.

No not a new car. The first pretty good running machine I had was a 1946 Lincoln, 12 cylinder with 63K miles. Paid $425 (out of a maximum budget of $500). ca 1952. Drove the h--- out of it. Already had a wife and one baby. What's all the shouting about? Had it made! Kept it to 120K miles until 1958. Drove it all the way to Beerworld's country (northern Wisconsin) and back through 105 degrees in Kansas. I marveled about the pioneers who had "Made" the middle of America with teams of mules and oxen. My grandfather never had a car or tractor, no electricity in a farm house, and died happy in 1934.

Other things about cars of the 20's, 30's and 40's. No power steering, no power brakes, no radio, no air conditioning. But they moved. A brand new Ford pickup (straight six) was available on a Dallas car lot in 1949, still with none of the above, for $950. On my first job with an electrical engineering degree, paying $225/month. Not enough; rode the bus from my rented room ($10/week, no meals).

The olden days.
