Avio and Lightweight materials for breakthrough components.
Avio Aero is leading a project entitled “Lightweight materials for breakthrough components engines." This will involve developing products with Additive Manufacturing technology (EBM or Electron Beam Melting) and applying the process to TiAl for stable and repeatable production of rugged aeronautical components.
It's part of E-BREAK : Engine Breakthrough Components and Subsystems, a large-scale integrated project, funded by the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Commission.
Avio's Role:
"SP5 : Lightweight material to preserve from a significant mass increase. The work will focus on the development of the TiAl intermetallic alloys for low pressure component application. The use of TiAl in the engine is a major breakthrough in engine weight reduction. Technical gaps hindering the use of TiAl need to be assessed."
