ARM has a big thank you to Cadence and Synopsys in their announcement and they both issued news stories about it at the same time. So I think a fair bit of the magic must be improved design tools. Also of course ARM has had quite a bit of experience with the A15 and A57 by now and must know where the problems are.

Certainly something which Intel will also benefit from, since they are also using those tools I guess. Also, Intel has the big advantage that they can just have a look into ARM's IP and see what the magic is. Not possible the other way round and I'd say definitely an advantage for Intel.

Intel is most likely having a very close look at A72 and see if there's something interesting to know - they still got 1,5 years to do something similar if it helps them.
