Not to beleaguer the point but lets look at the picture.....

Not sure I agree with you. Lets say triple glazing a 3,000 sq ft house, new insulation, roof, pipe insulation,$LTD solar panels, etc etc. And if that owner was 55 years old. Is it worth it, if one had the lump sum to shell out, to do so?

Somebody 55 years old. Probably the kids, or most of the kids are out of the house. Doesn't a 3,000 SQ Ft house sound a bit big? IMO pass it on to some sucker and get smaller. The bigger the place the more CU FT that you have to take care of, heating and cooling. Floors to clean, walls to clean. Windows to clean. One reason that many people (like me) who find that downsizing is actually upgrading the lifestyle.
Owner is 55 years old. 90 years old is 35 more years in the house. And 100 years old (45 years) is not unheard of. How many years of inflation in energy cost is there?
For that not only efficiency, but you also want quality. You don't want a 2nd rebuilding if possible.

Relying more on passive solar will save and wear and tear on any equipment. Making it last longer. Metal roof can last 50+ years. $LTD Solar can last that long. So yes a green house does pay for itself, whether it is you, or the next generation.....
And what happens if something breaks in power, and or heating and cooling? Emergency situation. Extremely hot or cold outside, it will insulate you and protect you from what is happening outside. -10 outside and no heat, and you need less heat to keep warm if any.

On the same subject, but different case. I read about a case where there was a leaky house and some moron just puts in geothermal in. Meaning the high power heat pump keeps on running making a huge electric bill. Or have to have a huge expensive solar system with batteries.
That is why I wish JN would look at expanding $LTD/SWKS/MD that way....
It would also set us apart from the competition.
And protect us from plug n play solar....
