The *x86* *ISA* actually. Very few *OSes* of worth don't run on x86
so don't conflate the two.

Back to your stupid diversity comment - oh yeah cuz society and
the economy always benefits from diversity in pervasive underlying
technical standards.

You know, the choice to buy either 110 V 60 Hz electricity from power
company A, 180V 48 Hz from company B, 319 V, 400 Hz from company
C and so on. Gives the individual a wonderful freedom to choose to
best meet *their* needs.
