The shares do not exist...

Naked shorting is where an MM sells stock that he does not own and has not barrowed.

This happens most of the time because there is not time to aquire the stock to sell.

However in a world market, some attempt to drive the price of a stock down by shorting shares that do not exist.
some stock have been shorted as much as 120%

I have no way of telling how much this stock has been shorted.

IF there is a float of about 100M there may be as much as 70-110M shares shorted giving an apparent float of 210M (110m non existant shares)
if the stock goes up the 110m non existant shares must be bought back by the shorter.

This causes a buying panic and the price goes up could hit $1 before the price settles
