Patient at Denver Health Medical Center being tested for Ebola

DENVER - A patient has been taken to Denver Health Medical Center to be tested for the Ebola virus.

"The patient had recently returned from affected areas in Africa and was being monitored per health department protocols," officials with Denver Health said in a news release.

The hospital said the patient was moved to the hospital early Monday morning in a specialized ambulance.

Officials did not say why the patient went from being monitored to being hospitalized.

The patients is being treated in the hospital's designated inpatient care unit, officials said.

"This unit is isolated from other areas of the hospital and the patient is being cared for by specially trained staff," according to Denver Health.

“We are taking all the necessary precautions to protect both our patients and staff, even though the infection with the virus is not confirmed,” said Dr. Connie Price, Chief of Infectious Diseases at Denver Health. “We have staff trained specifically to assist with patients who may have contracted the Ebola virus."

The ambulance that transported the patient has been removed from service until the patient's Ebola test results are complete, officials said.
