Police enforce vehicle control rules in West Lake area

Auto vehicles still using the National I and II emission standards are banned from entering the West Lake area starting from 2015 and Hangzhou police stopped 322 such vehicles and slapped 102 warning tickets during the three-day New Year holiday.

Meanwhile, police blocked 874 vehicles from entering the area for not following the odd-even license plate rules which require cars to enter the West Lake area according to the last digit on their license plates on weekends and public holidays.

Local highways did not report congestions yesterday, the end of the holiday. “Highway traffic is unexpectedly sooth,” said a driver surnamed Yang. He said it took him only two hours to drive from Quzhou to Hangzhou. The same trip took him four and a half hours during the National Day holiday in early October last year.

Officials attributed smooth traffic to the absence of toll-free policy, shorter holiday compared with the National Day holiday, and closeness to the Chinese New Year
