steel i was a derivatives market maker for many, many years so this is a subject near and dear to me, although i will say that the way markets are made in the fully liquid derivatives pits in chicago are very different from how i observe these pink sheet market maker slimeballs. my conclusion is that these scum sucking pink sheets market makers always "carry delta" -- meaning they do not keep neutral books like traditional market makers. paper comes in one way so they have to take sides. this means we are always trading against the mm's. for example, if everyone is buying the stock the market maker gets very short and thus will move us down to attract buyers. this is what has happened in the last year since the abbott announcement IMO. the market maker got so short from all the buying that he had to bring us lower and lower to cover his position. looks like we bottomed around .70. keep in mind that the market maker wants to short the stock as high as possible, so he has every motivation to let it run when the bid gets volume. IMO the market maker is not really doing any long delta stuff here because there are not enough genuine sellers. as far as trading ranges, again it's all determined by the market makers book. clearly he found a bid down at the .70 - .80 range, which is why we hung out there so long while he unloaded to the buyer. my guess is that the market maker is pretty flat to slightly short at this time. the best part about moving onto a real exchange is that their is actually competition amongst market makers, so we cannot be moved around at will. unless, of course, one of the larger primaries gets involved with the stock at which point he will be the big dog and do what he wants...market making 101: in a pit with many locals (market makers) he who is most capitalized wins
