Vancomycin is a very difficult antibiotic to dose correctly because it's blood levels are affected by so many factors like other drug administration, age, liver and kidney function etc.

A person receiving vancomycin needs to have daily blood tests to check peak and trough levels.
The dose is then adjusted so it stays in this very tight range in order to be dosed appropriately .

If you were a patient in the hospital with an i.v. in one arm and the other arm having to be stuck 2 times per day would you not get frustrated and ask for a better antibiotic ??

I would prefer to have one dose given i.v. and then go home to heal so I wouldn't have to be exposed to multiple other bugs.
