2G biofuels: a new step for Syndièse

CEA inaugurated on October 6, the technology platform Syndièse-BtS at Bure-Saudron a site straddling the departments of the Meuse and Haute-Marne. The technology aims to transform lignocellulosic biomass into synthesis gas : Biomass to Syngas (BtS). This is the first phase of a larger project to convert biomass into second generation biofuels via technology Biomass to Liquid (BtL). The project involves the construction of a demonstrator who should have 10 tons of processing capacity of biomass per hour, fueled primarily lignocellulosic biomass (wood, straw or green waste).

CEA, carrier of Syndièse project since 2009, working closely with Air Liquide for this part of the program, in this case for the technology biomass burning, with an oxygen burner, and gasification. According to the CEA, the technology platform "will be accessible to other academic and industrial players involved in the development of equipment and, more broadly pretreatment processes and conversion of biomass."

This first phase of BTS Syndièse project required an investment of 24 million euros. In total, the planned investment for the entire project Syndièse amounted to € 250 million. "This project is part of the economic support of the laboratory of ANDRA provided by law of 28 June 2006 and is supported reaffirmed the state, local and regional authorities and local stakeholders," says Thierry Pussieux, head of Syndièse program at CEA.
