airdale: Just talked to Schwab: and he said that in my case my shares can not be used for SHORTING, I have 12 accounts but do *not* have any Margin ACCOUNTS.


Margin accounts need written request as you stated, but even then due to the small print on the agreement you signed to get the account you may in fact not be able to specify,


He said to me that none of my shares in any of my accounts are lent currently.
