So wasn't that a winning bet if that was what in fact was done? How do we know for sure these were purely sought after bought calls and not someone selling covered calls? Is the volume shown on calls and puts pure buys?

BTW, you asked about covered calls, which is a neutral position to collect a short term gain on a stock you don't expect to move up much. More of a protection against downside loss by selling against your position.
