The following link displays a chart as to where solar has met grid parity and where it is close. Solar has drifted away from grid parity in some places recently because of the recent drop in natural gas prices, but the trend continues.

The following is a link to a study that indicates solar at grid parity in all 50 US States by 2016. Again, this may or may not happen by the time predicted, but the trend is obvious and this will eventually happen.

The main point is that subsidies has created the solar market which is steadily moving toward sustainability without the subsidies. It will happen in some geographies much faster than others and it may not happen everywhere, but in the long run, it will be a success story for humanity, with the exception that it could have been done much sooner if countries had been willing to invest in developing the technology sooner.
