I could make a lot more money selling the option itself, but only if the stock depreciates enough in the short term, which I am not expecting.

You would never exercise your put, even at expiration, unless you held AMD shares. Instead you would sell your put, just (or indeed anytime) prior to expiration.

And for what it's worth, I only very rarely trade options.

I'd suggest you read up a bit on the mechanics.
