So very sad to read that Dr Salia has died. In every sense of the word, he was a true HERO! Both he and his wife showed great compassion in the decision they made in him going back to Freetown to perform surgery on some of the poorest people in Sierra Leon. He would have been well aware of the extreme risk in performing surgery on patient's who may have been exposed to Ebola and yet he willingly cared for these patients.
I hope his death prompts a re-thinking of our obligation to all ebola health care workers. In the least I would like to see the special 25 bed field hospital that the US set up at Monrovia airport to treat health care workers, increase their capabilities in caring for patients on-site. Since this hospital is staffed by US. Public Health Care Workers, who are better trained, they should be able to provide kidney dialysis and hemopurifier treatment with much earlier intervention, preventing any more health care workers experiencing Dr. Salia's fate.
