Between 2000 and 2006, less than half of Americans believed having a gun at home makes it safer -- but since then, this percentage has significantly increased to a majority.

I'd say that's because people are seeing that crime really does pay since criminals seem to be getting away with more and more. Plus, one never knows when some group of people will get pissed off and find a reason to loot and pillage!

I also feel that people have more of a distrust in the government these days.
