patents run out or a new one comes along that is better or adds something and no longer they are worth anything.



There is a R&D depreciation assets but like anything it takes revenue to unlock those assets but unlike depreciation of machinery that is front loaded R&D is rear loaded.


the other thing is that after the huge growth in R&D the assets that supported the R&D plus R&D its self in its depreciated form is worth so little on the market for the ones who are creating revenue hence revenue creators are moving ahead leaps and pounds while others are trapped at there mercy with low depreciated asset value in the market today.
