IMO your on the right track with this line of reasoning. I also have friends that are masons that believe that the world thinks something bad is going to happen any day and they believe that nothing bad will ever happen in our lifetimes.

Is it The normalcy bias? not sure but I'm not willing to keep thinking everything will be just great for ever when I can just look around and see it's going to hell...
