The fact is most market making (the actual decision of making the market) is now done with algorithms, not human decision. And it is done using processors much more sophisticated than an old Atari computer. Since the early 2000's it's become too low-margin for many firms to employ traders. I have three friends that use to make markets in equities for GS and MS; two now do buy-side trading for institutionals and the other is an analyst for BoA.

Do you know what market making actually is? Do you know what they are required to do to be approved for NYSE and NASDAQ? I suspect folks like you think they are in business to "manipulate stock prices" and "steal your shares". And that when you see "NITE" with a buy or sell that it is for NITE's market making responsibilities and not for a brokerage customer. Actually 98% of the time it is for a customer.
