Wouldn't the day of record be set in the past? So for example I don't remember when they announced the spin off but let's say it was in October, wouldn't they set say 9/30 as the date of record, so you would have had to own shares as of that date in order to get shares of the new company?

It wouldn't make sense to set it in the future, too much manipulation could occur, no?
