Bioinformatics Scientist
Ceres, Inc. - Newbury Park, CA
Ceres is seeking a Bioinformatics Scientist for our innovative genomics application, Persephone™. The Bioinformatics Scientist will have the opportunity to play a significant role in the launch of our SaaS edition as well as enterprise-scale installations at major life science companies. As part of our dynamic and growing team, Bioinformatics Scientist is responsible for integrating public and proprietary research and trial data into the Persephone solution. She/he will be responsible for the curation of genomic and clinical data and aligning the data with existing architecture and ontologies.
Product Background: Driven by dramatically lower costs, DNA sequencing is one of the most commonly used technologies in biological & medical research laboratories. Sequencing an entire genome now costs less than an MRI scan. This explosion of sequence data is being stored across a number of both private and public databases, many of which are poorly organized or curated. This creates a major hurdle in the efficient organization, analysis and interpretation of what has become an overload of data. Persephone has been developed to eliminate this bottleneck by enabling the rapid and easy visualization of large amounts of genomics data by experts and non-experts alike, in a manner that is intuitive, scalable and actionable. Specifically, Persephone has been designed with a number of optimizations to quickly fetch and render very large datasets. These include optimized database schema, proprietary compression, caching of data, multi-threading and other advanced techniques.
Responsibilities:

Algorithm development -- development of algorithms for statistical analysis and meta-analysis of vast amount of studies across various data types and platforms used for basic research, drug discovery and clinical applications.
Data integration -- compilation and integration of the most up-to-date bioinformatics/genomics/proteomics resources used to analyze and interpret diverse types of “-omics” data.
Data analysis -- apply best-practice statistical/computational methods to analyze large-scale biological data, such as gene expression, copy-number, mutation, methylation, NextGen sequencing, GWAS, etc.
Pipeline development -- design and develop pipelines to automate established analysis so that thousands of studies of same type can be analyzed in a robust manner.
Desired Skills and Experience:

Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Biostatistics, Computer Science or equivalent.
Expert knowledge on current bioinformatics/genomics/proteomics resources available at NCBI, Ensembl, UCSC, Broad Institute, etc.
Extensive experience in bioinformatics integration across genomics, proteomics, genotyping and sequencing data type.
Strong experience in data analysis and pipeline development.
Programming skills (preferably C#, Python, C/C++, Java)
Knowledge of SQL (preferably Oracle)
Ceres is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

About Ceres
Ceres, Inc. is a leading agricultural biotechnology company based in Thousand Oaks, California. We use a combination of advanced plant breeding and biotechnology to develop seed products that we believe address the limitations of first-generation bioenergy feedstocks, increase crop productivity, reduce crop inputs and improve cultivation on marginal land. We also license our genetics technology, software and biotech traits to other organizations.
