WASHINGTON--Dallas nurse Nina Pham, who fell ill with Ebola after treating a Liberian patient who died in the U.S., is free from the virus and was discharged from the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center, officials said Friday.
Ms. Pham had been transported from Texas to the Bethesda, Md., facility Oct. 16. She appeared at an NIH briefing on Friday with her mother and sister and said she "feels fortunate and blessed."
"She has no virus in her," said Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, at the briefing. She had "five negative tests" to show she is virus free.
Ms. Pham and another nurse, Amber Joy Vinson, contracted the virus at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas while treating Thomas Eric Duncan. Mr. Duncan, a Liberian native and the first person diagnosed with Ebola in the U.S., was admitted to the hospital on Sept. 28 and died Oct. 8.
On Wednesday, the family of Ms. Vinson said she no longer has detectable virus in her body and has been approved for transfer from isolation. Atlanta'sEmory University Hospital, which is treating her, declined to comment.
