Non-competes are completely, unequivocally illegal for employees of companies in California (like Intuitive). Only business owners can be held to non-competes.

Now with that in mind, companies are well within their rights to protect their trade secrets with patents and other legal protections like that. But a company in California cannot prevent an employee who "learned the ropes" there from going off and starting a venture of their own or going to work for a competitor.
