I am writing to you to tell you about the recent events in my country.
The vast majority of Catalans — including my family and many of my friends — wish to be allowed to vote on Catalonia’s future. That is why we support plans for a referendum in November 2014.

This concerns you because democracy concerns us all. The European Community was created as a financial market by and for the States. However, since then, Europe is becoming more than that and now represents the home of European citizens. They, like the Catalans, want to add freely their identity and efforts to build a Europe based on liberty and democratic principles.

Tell your friends and contacts about what is at stake in Catalonia in 2014. Back in 1714 — exactly three hundred years ago this September — there was a similar choice. Then, a democratic Catalonia lost its freedoms to the Bourbon dynasty bent on crushing democracy and cultural differences in its pursuit of its narrow Absolutist vision of society. By contrast, the Mercantilist, laissez-faire society espoused by Catalonia (and its Dutch and British allies) was in the liberal tradition. Three centuries later, the differences are no less sharp. Today’s right-wing central government in Madrid seems equally intent on erasing Catalan language and culture and denying the right of people in Catalonia to vote on their future. Now at another watershed for my country, you have the chance to give History a nudge in the right direction by supporting Catalans’ right to vote.

More information on the Catalan National Assembly (Assemblea Nacional Catalana) — a broad, non-party grassroots organisation — can be found on the following web site: http://catalanassembly.org . It reveals the peaceful, democratic nature of our aims and what lies behind Catalans’ overwhelming support for a referendum.

Kindest regards,
