One less well-known (but very important use) of Niobium is in the Photonics industry. Lithium-Niobate crystals (LiNbO3) are extensively used in photonics lasers, modulators, detectors, etc. These crystals are extremely crucial to our communications infrastructure, cell-phones, and defense industries. The fact that China produces/controls greater than 90% of this market is reportedly of great concern to the strategic interests of our gov't.
