Robotic surgery makes some aspects of laparoscopic surgery easier. Surgeons may not get to try out the robot before the hospital purchases it. Intuitive used very influential and forceful marketing techniques to force hospitals and to buy a robot. They usually persuade a couple of surgeons or tell hospital administration they will sell a robot to the hospital down the road and tell them that they will lose volume. Sometimes the surgeons lose interest and other surgeons don't want to use it and the robot ends up being a coat hanger. Historically, first it was cardiac surgery. That failed. Than prostate surgery. That worked but small patient population. Then they went to hysterectomy. Some gynecologists are good but some of them are not interested. Now it's general surgery (lots of surgeries) but the initial DaVinci robots were not designed necessarily for general surgery in mind. That is where SPORT is different.
