From my own experience, I think that L2 is frequently used to send "false messsages". Same with imaginary "matched trades" that I believe are often made up.

For those who know me, I often accumulate (and post this in real time) when stocks are going down, often when volume is very light. It ain't pretty and it can be lonely, but it seems to work very well for me over time.

During those times, at least half of my buys are made to look like someone dumping. Often my volume may be almost all of the volume of the day. It often is made to look like someone selling. I will see supposed "matched trades" above my own buys.

My point - generalizations - in pinkie world are not to be believed. There is enough manipulation to go around.
