Then why was there a clause to extend the lease to 84 months? Why bother?

Answer :
Because the agreement was signed in august 2013, and one year has past, including several months when 19 engineers from TransCanada have contributed in designing the AOT.
Therefore in July 2014, one year later they were in a different state of mind, apparently an even more positive one about the AOT.
