and yes, I'm a huge SF fan, but there are so many types of SF now that it is almost too broad a genre to define, but you "know it when you see it"!!!!....In general, I like "hard" SF, but have also read/watched plenty in the "soft" category....

You may like The Hyperion Cantos, a series of related books in the same fictional universe, are a REALLY good mostly-soft SF works. It was supposed to be made into a movie eventually (I've been waiting years).....if you ever need a good read, this is it.....I especially found the Gideon Drive concept very clever: the future Catholic Church FTL starship that kills you whenever it breaks lightspeed, so you have to get "resurrected" by a cross-shaped parasite on your chest, which in turn is controlled by an evil "techocore" god-like artificial intelligence with a sinister plot against humanity, to flush out the Human Messiah vs Machine Messiah in a battle across time....wow!!!!....great concept....

I like these two books in the series the best, you can read them without reading the first 2 books, and it also has a love story element that should appeal to the lady readers as well....word of warning: if you start reading this, it will become very addictive, so much so your hands might shake at the end of the series and the final conflict.....seriously, it's that good and powerful:
