I've read again the articles mentioning Pearl and they don't say what you are claiming. If there was an article that stated that Pearl was a career criminal you could quote that article without libel, but the newspapers haven't said that she is a career criminal. It is true that you can be a criminal without a criminal conviction, but call someone a career criminal in a public formum based on your opinion is clearly libel. If Pearl was a criminal, the DOJ wouldn't sit on their butts for more than a decade with all of press attention she has gotten.

Normally you say a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty when that person has been charged with a crime, but in this case, Pearl has not been charged with any crime, so she is not only innocent under the law, there is no evidenece that she is a suspect of any crime. Not even any mention of a grand jury investigation, for example.
