START HERE: 2014 MILITARY PAY SCALE (until I find the article I'm looking for with image comparisons) Mostly Monthly Pay base w/o bene's, NOTE the YEARS needed on the scale

This doesn't include combat pay, housing allowance, FSA, etc. and of course no taxes are paid on their income. Tax effect the numbers, throw in combat pay, housing, etc. and its a decent income for people that have no better option.
