Hensley's Zicam caused some people to have loss of smell, and had to be changed to meet the Fed's requirements. The history of all that has been posted here quite a few times.
The very first Zicam® product, the original Cold Remedy Nasal Gel™, came into the market in 1999. This first Zicam® cold shortening offering was joined by symptom-relieving products when the Congestion and Sinus items were launched in 2002. In 2004, Zicam® Cold Remedy oral products launched —the most popular of which is our RapidMelt® which dissolves rapidly on your tongue without water. Zicam® Cold Remedy RapidMelts® remain the most popular form of cold-shortening products available on the market.
The growth of the Zicam® brand has not been without its challenges. In 2009, Matrixx received a warning letter from the FDA regarding our Zicam® Cold Remedy Nasal Gel™ Spray and Nasal Swab products. The warning letter cited reports of some consumers losing their sense of smell (anosmia). Out of an abundance of caution, while a clinical link between the Zicam® products and anosmia was never found, the company voluntarily recalled the items, and ceased all future shipments.
