Memphis Teen Mob Storms Kroger, Knocking Random Victims Unconscious

A mob of Memphis teens descended on a Kroger grocery store Saturday night, attacking and injuring a 25-year-old man and two teenagers in random acts of violence.

"All these motherf***ing kids, f***ing hood rats," says a young woman who filmed parts of the incident. Her video, which has now been picked up by local news outlets, shows a high school kid lying on the ground while a group of young people repeatedly stomp and kick him.

According to CBS affiliates KTHV and WREG, one adult — 19-year-old Raheem Richardson — and four teens ages 15-17 have all been arrested in connection with the riot. One witness said "it's not an exaggeration" to say that more than 100 kids descended on the Poplar Plaza parking lot.

"They were playing a game called 'point them out, knock them out,' where they would point someone out and attempt to knock them out or fight them. There was no real reason behind it," the witness said. Many say the game is a mob version of the "knockout game," which has targeted random victims with sucker punches in several U.S. cities.

WREG’s Elise Preston asked the witness if the attacks were racially motivated, as the video footage shows that most, if not all, of the rioters were black.

"No, they were black and white. Will is white, Brian is black. And then my other friend, Brandon, he's black as well," said the witness, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of reprisal.

During the attack, the young woman who filmed part of the riot says, "Hold on they got a white dude. [Laughing] Hold on, look at 'em!" as a group of young black people attack a white man. Later in the video, she shows concern for a white boy who had been beaten unconscious, exclaiming, "Oh my God. Get him y'all, somebody call somebody. Call somebody."

Memphis Police Department Director Toney Armstrong released a statement following the incident, and Memphis Mayor A C Wharton held a news conference in which he condemned the attack, and promised a thorough investigation.

"We are fully aware of the last night's incidents," said Armstrong.

"It is extremely troubling to see how many young people were involved, especially on the heels of last week's youth forum. A lot of our citizens are working to provide safe and productive alternatives for our youth. For those that choose not to take advantage of these opportunities, we will work tirelessly to identify, locate and hold you accountable. Last night's events clearly demonstrates a lack of parental controls and if warranted these parents will also be held accountable."

Wharton confirmed that one of the teenage attackers arrested in connection with the incident was not enrolled in school, and his mother has been previously charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
