Rand Paul Goes Full War Hawk, Says That, Unlike Obama, He Would "Destroy ISIS Militarily"

In an increasingly incoherent campaign for president, former purported non-interventionist Rand Paul has criticized Hillary Clinton for being too hawkish and criticized Barack Obama for failing to engage ISIS with American troops in a land war in the middle east. He is not even trying to fake coherence.

First, the non-interventionist Rand Paul last week:

Sen. Rand Paul (R., Ky., stepping up his criticism of U.S. policy in response to the rise of Islamic militants, Thursday criticized Hillary Clinton for suggesting that a more aggressive U.S. policy supporting rebels in Syria might have impeded the militants’ rise.

“To interventionists like former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, we would caution that arming the Islamic rebels in Syria created a haven for the Islamic State,’’ said Mr. Paul in an op-ed article in The Wall Street Journal, referring to the militant group sweeping through Syria and northern Iraq that is also known as ISIS. “We are lucky Mrs. Clinton didn’t get her way and the Obama administration did not bring about regime change in Syria. That new regime might well be ISIS.”

Wall Street Journal, Aug 28, 2014

And the war hawk this week:

“Speaking to a ballroom later, some of the loudest applause for Paul came when he quipped: ‘If the president has no strategy, maybe it’s time for a new president.’

“In an emailed comment, however, Paul elaborated by saying: ‘If I were President, I would call a joint session of Congress. I would lay out the reasoning of why ISIS is a threat to our national security and seek congressional authorization to destroy ISIS militarily.’

Paul had recently expressed ambivalence about U.S. military action against the Islamist terrorists who are building a state in Iraq and Syria. “I have mixed feelings about it,” Paul said of U.S. airstrikes against ISIS in early August. ‘I’m not saying I’m completely opposed to helping with arms or maybe even bombing,” he added.

So in less than a month Mr. Non-Intervention has gone from not being real sure about limited airstrikes in Iraq to calling for what sounds like a full-fledged declaration of war and an invasion. Washington Monthly

The incoherence suggests that Rand Paul says whatever he thinks his audience wants to hear and has no real principled beliefs, other than racism, sexism, and classism dressed up in "libertarian" garb. Yes, those are principles, but they are god-awful ones.
