Almost speechless - from the tone of the response I am going to assume it wasn't self serving to try and mitigate his involvement.

In his first email to me, Apel stated:

David Hoye and his wife MaryAnne are down in LA now with the chairman Kevin. He texted me that one of our UC Berkeley student employees is designing our website. I'll connect you when it's up. Everything is happening so fast. I have no idea at this point about the business stuff. I hope I end up with some stock. As a chemist, I am all over the cannabinoid chemical manipulation issue. We are going to make some money and help a lot of suffering people... I haven't been informed about what I should or shouldn't say.

This was written in may 2013 and certainly fits the response you posted.
