The introduction of slot machines and other innovative revenue generating measures at cash-strapped Caymanas Track Limited are closer to being realised, according to Government.
The state-owned horseracing company, set for divestment, has been aggressively moving towards improving its profitability and operational capacity.
To this end, Minister without portfolio in the Ministry of Finance Horace Dalley said the introduction of slot machines and telephone betting are among the initiatives to come on stream soon. He made the declaration last night at the opening of the 2014 Gaming Industry Summit at the Jamaica Conference Centre in downtown Kingston, according to state information agency JIS.
“With all the effort being made to become profitable, CTL now continues its thrust to generate revenue and further reduce its debt by (implementing) new policies and initiatives,” he reportedly said.
Gaming industry insiders have long lobbied for slot machines to be implemented at Caymanas, as they say it would allow the track to be more competitive in the wider gambling market. It would be in line with international practices. For instance, the Gulfstream Park racetrack in Florida has over 850 slot machines.
