In 70 years I've had many dogs, and in the 50 years I have
specialized in Weimaraners I have had over a dozen Weims
that were personal companion dogs, as opposed to puppies
bred for sale, foster Weims and those held briefly for re-home
purposes. That said, of all of my dogs in my life, the one that
stands out, and whose ashes will be buried with me, was
named Stirling. I have written about him before, on this board.

When Stirling was 8 months old, he was dognapped. He tried
to follow my truck to a neighbor's farm 3/4 of a mile away and
must have been picked up by a driver within 5 minutes, as he
could easily run a mile in that time. He had a orange collar
with a brass plate with his name, my last name, address and
phone number, plus dog license and rabies tag. Everyone
knows me, that I breed Weims, the road bares my last name.
So this was no mistake of finding a lost dog. I searched, did
all the appropriate steps, was ill for 3 days. After dark, I heard
a car stop in front of my house, a door slam, and a car speed
away. A bloody and scratched up Stirling was at the door in
seconds. He had been in dog fights, but we don't have any
fight rings around here. Like when someone brought in a
couple of hookers a few years ago to work a bar, too many
Puritans in this community to let that slide and animal rights
people here outnumber people who will not tolerate hookers.
Sterling weighed almost 100 lb and I think they just wanted
to keep him and had another dog. Stirling was just too much
for them and would have constantly tried to get away and get
home. As the years went buy I know how he acted as I had
to board him when a female was in heat and I couldn't risk a
accidental breeding. God how I loved that dog, and he me.
Cancer is not fair, as well you know KC.
