Equity value of patents and applications for patent are among most difficult items to determine. I once heard from a class action attorney that such values are 'subsumed' in the value of the subject matter claimed by patent. Not too helpful speculation[0---100%]. I also heard a talk by Phil Johnson, then head of JNJ patent dept, who said that patents and other IP comprise 65% of the market cap of company. That was JNJ and an attorney's opinion. I have yet to see any 10-k place an actual value on patents held by that entity. GS in that class action suit aforementioned was not asked to, and expressly did not, place a value on patents in determining whether share price offered by acquiring company for entity to be acquired was fair market value.
