Perhaps this is because of the divisive tactics of a few. One can listen to just so much nonsense before feeling compelled to defend the target of said nonsense.

They seem to have some personal involvement with the company, much more than someone who has merely invested in a stock. I invest in many stocks but don't valiantly rush to the defense of the company when someone says something contradictory to my beliefs.
