I guess it's somwhat like I remember reading an article in the wall street journal from the President of then ATT before their break-up. (when they were the king of hill). He related to the fact that at first he fought lowering the unit price per call, board overwhelmingly passed it and each time they did it it increased sales and total profits. Thereby reflecting the correlation between increased sales and total profit.
But as all things it can only go so far.
Also they kept their other expenses in check with proportionate increases.
