Then what happened. AMD wrote its own obituary. That is how the drama payed out.
That is the fact truth.


In a nutshell, Intel got surprised by AMD, found itself in a hole, and held AMD off by abusing their dominant position for the half-decade it took for them to recover technically and field a superior line of products.

Hypothesis: Intel had to forgo significant revenue and net profit to "compete" with AMD when AMD had its best competitive position, i.e. K7 & AMD vs. Netburst.

--Maybe some TA enthusiast can take a look at Intel's annual revenue, net profit, and net margin history to see if there are any discontinuities during, say, a 2001-2008 window. I'd be looking for signs that it cost significantly more than AMD's entire revenue during the same period to compete with AMD.
