Probably a hijacked ad

I'm thinking the Java upgrade popup may have been caused by one of the ads on the page. I notice looking at my Chrome cache that it had this just before each occurrence

The first few parameters up to and including the bid parameter were the same each time.

I've reenabled Javascript for the site and it doesn't seem to be happening now thankfully.
