ha Grumps17, thanks for the thought, however, to extend an effort including the utilization of energy in a fruitless exercise is a perfectly proper expression in our great English language, I believe either expression is correct, although my expression implies a much more dedicated effort rather than just "expending" some energy. To extend oneself in a particular direction implies and effort in which the entire being is focused.
