The Dane . . .I don't know of an exact scale of an oboe vs. bassoon. Perhaps as Nightcrawler alluded to, the reason for the comparison was the name for the well being obo-1, thus the statement - this is not an oboe; it's a bassoon. I even thought at one time the length of the instrument might be important to the statement since the oboe is much longer; therefore, the depth being much deeper (the 800++ statement), but perhaps all that is making too much of the comparison. I think it is just a play on words of obo(e) and comparing it to something in the same family being much bigger.
