Being awake and seeing a vision are not exclusive. But a vision and something that actually happened are two different things. It wasn't a dream, it was a vision. The more alert they were, the more attentive they could be while seeing the vision and the more accurately they could describe it to us.

When Peter was being released from prison the differentiation was between an actual event and a vision, not between a dream and a vision.
