Truth is, based on my experience, that the data needs to be explained no matter what direction it goes even if it can't be explained by the study itself researchers will want to "tease all they can" from the data to avoid bias and confounding results. And sometimes even if its impossible to do so, resources will be exhausted to ensure face. That is, no one wants egg on their face and frankly, it's understood that although all of the obvious errors have been eliminated and the most unlikely errors will never be totally eliminated the data set needs scrutiny 10x that of beyond reproach...
