The five Great Lakes—Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario—contain about 20% of the world’s surface fresh water.
I’ve paddled and hiked and climbed and camped around them for over 50 years. The natural beauty is awe-inspiring; the man-made pollution is simply staggering, disappointing, tear-inducing. You wouldn’t believe it unless you saw it.
Every form of trash imaginable, from the ubiquitous beer and pop cans to tires and plastic just strewn along thousands of miles of shore. Imagine taking your full garbage can and deliberately, systematically, dumping it along the border of your garden. Even worse, almost impossible to believe here in 2014, you still see open pipes—from 6” diameter to 4’ in diameter—gushing industrial waste and friggin’ raw sewage into the lakes!
It is just discouraging. We’re poor stewards of our planet: very, very poor.
All that is needed to make a happy life is within yourself, in your way of thinking. -Marcus Aurelius
