I started working on farms and in orchards full time when I was still in the single digits. There are three main types of strawberries or used to be. (it's been awhile) I believe your referring to the junebearer type and the "first year rule". It is recommended that you pick off the flowers has soon as they develop so that all the nutrients go to developing a large root system. Strawberries have a shallow root system and dry out fast. With hydroponics you don't need an elaborate root system. In soil strawberries grow fast but with hydroponics they will grow at supersonic speeds. With hydro the yields will be heavy and the berries will be cleaner with much less critter damage. A wide variety of animals love strawberries. Deer eat the leaves and birds, squirrels, rodents and especially turtles love strawberries. Greenhouses will prevent series damage. Other than that they are incredibly easy to grow and will produce massive yields and command a high price at market.
