You make absolutely relevant and accurate points I Need Help,.... but I don't think that this statement is an accurate description,....

the nonchalantness of the medical community rings a bell.

I suspect organizations like WHO and any African health agency has been anything but nonchalant. But in their cases it's been an economic choice to deal with more widespread disease issues that have (at least to this point) been much larger sources of mortality (if not by percentage dead).

Things like Malaria and assorted parasitic infections have been chronic problems there, where Ebola has 'seemed' a more limited problem that they could put on the back burner.

Now - if you want to make the arguement that US Medical communities, or European ones, or even most Asian ones have been nonchalant - you are right on the ball.

Economically (and selfishly in a for-profit capitalist medical and pharma industry) developing a cure or vaccine for Ebola/Marburg has no profit in it. Without profit - no pharma company is going to spend the time & resources needed to make a treatment for a disease that brings them no return. It would have to be a Government-funded or NGO-funded group that would make the effort.

So Dr. Bavari's quote isn't so much naive (IMO) as it is a reflection of the reality of the situation in a capitalist market system.

“The two most powerful warriors are patience and time.”
- Leo Nikolaevich Tolstoy
